Why we built a salary calculator

Net & Gross exists to answer one question quickly and honestly: if this is what a job pays, what actually lands in your account? Job postings, offer letters, and job boards talk in gross salary. Rent, groceries, and everything else in your life run on take-home pay. We built this tool to close that gap.

How the numbers work

The calculator applies published 2026 tax brackets and payroll deduction rates for Canada (federal + all provinces and territories) and the United States (federal + all 50 states and DC). For Canada, that includes federal and provincial income tax, CPP/QPP, and EI/QPIP, plus Ontario's surtax and health premium and Quebec's federal tax abatement. For the US, that includes federal income tax, FICA (Social Security and Medicare), and state income tax.

These are estimates, not filing-ready figures.

The calculator assumes a single filer with standard deductions and doesn't model every credit, dependent, or personal circumstance. US state figures also don't account for state-specific standard deductions, so actual state tax is often a little lower than shown. For anything that touches your actual tax return, talk to a licensed accountant or tax preparer in your province, state, or territory.

How we keep this free

The calculator itself is free to use, with no account or sign-up required. The site is supported by display advertising, which helps cover hosting and the time spent keeping tax figures current each year.

Questions or corrections

Tax rules change every year, and we do our best to keep the brackets current, but if you spot something that looks off, we'd genuinely like to know. Reach out via the contact page.
